As it appears “here” on the buddypress.org home page

Are you talking about the Home, About, Blog, Community, Extend, and Support tabs on buddypress.org? Those are WP Pages. In BP 1.3, there will be better support for having a setup like this that is totally customizable, but even now bp-default does something almost exactly like this.

The way that individual user navigation (profile, activity, groups, etc) is laid out on this site is just like it is in bp-default.

    Or am I missing something?

As Boone suggests these are just styling concerns aren’t they? Tabs are simply artifice, an illusion created through CSS; thus for bp-default you must create a child theme to allow you to re-style those links in the manner you wish.

instead of having a drop down menu from “my account” i want it to be individual tabs for all items in the BP nav bar.

i was refrering to the section on home page (screen shots) of “With all the features you’ll love.” the way it appears in them screen shots

These screenshots have been taken from the default theme, so if you’re using that you already have what you want. The drop down menu is just another way to navigate your site, but can be deactivated if you want to do that.
