How do I add the user's avatar and activity stream to my theme?

Hi I am using Thesis Theme with WP 3.8 and BP 1.9
In thesis I can use template tags to customize my theme and what I am trying to do is have the current logged in user’s avatar appear in a floating nav menu that is on all the pages.
I found some snippets that worked but only on a strictly buddypress page on other pages that area was blank.
The other thing I would like to do is have the just post box for the activity stream, and the activity stream to show up on a specific page with out all the extras, sort of as a distraction free activity stream and post area with a link to the full stream.
If anyone can give me some suggestions I’d appreciate it.
