How do I become a developer?

Hi,
I run a site called http://www.getpaidfrom.us. I started to install bp-core.php and found a problem. I troubleshot and fixed it. I wrote up a bug against it and how to fix it. (http://trac.buddypress.org/ticket/173) Now I want to incorporate in to the main trunk. Is there a way I can become a developer and go and make the needed changes myself? I’m here to help!
