How to add classes to BP activity items

Hi all,
I have been searching for a solution to add tags to BP activities with no success.
I decided to add a drop down select box to the BP activity box (I did) and now I want to add a class to the activity items corresponding to the selected drop down value.I could find two ways to do it, though none of them works well for me.
1. in buddypress.js file in my theme directory I added a js script which adds the classes correctly, but when I reload the page the classes disappear.
2. second way was to edit the buddypress-functions.php in the theme directory. I added a function that adds a class to all the activity items, but it is regardless anything, I am unable to connect it to the activity form drop down box.
