How to categorize Groups ?
-
I am building a website with 5000 different Groups, like a company-directory.
So giving each company its own “Group”.
How to categorize a big list of Groups into different categories ?
Like I want to sort this big list of Groups by industry-specific areas.
Many thanks,

Try BP Contents plugin. If you search around some has got it working on the newest BP version. Maybe Burt will resurrect it before Andy & jjj get this idea into core where it belongs.
well, not sure if this is the right plugin. Also Burt disappeared.
@Bowe: is this requirement similar to what you have suggested on “Super Groups” ?
Many thanks,
I have the same issue. My Search & Rescue organization doesn’t like the idea of having committee groups (like Search Management) mixed in with more informal groups… like say… a Friday Night Social group or Hiking group or what have you.
I’ll probably resort to a simple naming convention… i.e. “Committee – Search Management”. Not great. But at least they could sort by name.
Sticky groups would be very useful as well. For instance… we will have one general membership group that everyone will belong to. It would be great it that group could always float to the top.
There is some functionality written by TravelJunkie which allows you to create group types. Find his post here: https://buddypress.org/forums/topic/soon-to-release-bp-group-control-plugin
@Erich73: Supergroups are similar and could be seen as another group category.. The ideal situation would be if you could create different categories and could also say which category could do what. For instance:
Group Cat 1: Can use forums, activity stream and groupblog plugin
Group Cat 2: Only forums
Group Cat 3: Supergroup which can do all + has an extended activity stream as described in trac: https://trac.buddypress.org/ticket/1593
To make it ever better it would also be cool if you could set up different desciption fields to fill in per group;
category 1 : Info, history, goals
category 2: Name, description, latest news
There must be someone who could help us out with this guys
edit: I am willing to pay for this plugin to be developed. Might not be the only one I think?!
I’ve made a topic on Brajesh his forum where I proposed the idea to him.. If you would like to think with us you can register and leave some feedback to Brajesh and maybe feature requests:

Many thanks Bowe.
I actually just want to categorize the Groups, I do not need to have different Group-settings.
I will get in touch with Travel-Junkie.
I believe jjj suggested that this functionality would eventually be the subject for adding to core. It is an extension of the BPContents idea incorporating capabilities like for users.
I suspect this aways off, but maybe will get back on the radar after 1.2. This would be a giant step toward a more flexible CMS.
here is the ticket. But 1.3 it’s not so near…
https://trac.buddypress.org/ticket/1593
If someone is able to do this before or to make a beautiful “how to” for use group api…
oups that was this ticket .. https://trac.buddypress.org/ticket/1706
I think a better situation would be groups of groups.. IE
Superuser Group: Admins, Mods,
Midlevel Group: Testers, lower mods,
User level Group: All users..
I have been working with this concept with my “sitewide ID” idea.. It’s in the works for my image plugin and I bet it could be used from groups as well..
Right now a user or a group can have a album assigned to it by a specific ID number that no two users or groups can have(imagine a phonebook with companies, people, government ETC. They all have numbers but arnt JUST people, or JUST companies).
I thought if I switched the groups from tracking the User ID and switched to the sitewide ID you could potentially have a group IN a group..
Then a check would be made to see if a User was apart of a group that was inturn apart of a group.. (in actuality all users would be added to the root group w/o notification)
