how to change @ mention name

I am using paidmembership pro with buddypress. When someone signs up they are asked to create a username and password. But then when they get an account buddypress displays their username as thier display name.

They can change this in their profile, so I guess that is OK. but the “@” (used for mentions) is still the username. This makes for some weird @ mentions.

Is there a way to let people customize this @tag ? Or at the very least have it use the “display” name?

    See screen shot: http://www.awesomescreenshot.com/image/1887386/4d690dda1c14d0eb010b03aac6069264

    Thanks.

BuddyPress doesn’t let you change username but there are plugins available that will let you do that.

I don’t have an answer for you right now, I’m looking into the same issue too.

As I understand it you have the following issue. You have a user with the username Dave, their profile field ‘Name’ is called Apple, using mentions someone is tagging Apple but when posted it prints Dave and NOT Apple. Is that correct?

BuddyDev have a plugin that allows you to change the username – http://buddyuser.com/plugin-review-buddypress-username-changer

I’m a bit uncertain about allowing users to change their Usernames, it means they lose connections with the past in so much as the activity table is static so the name does not change on past activity items and this throws some errors, also I think it may make the admin anti spam task harder, users posting stuff then changing their login name.

Sorry for the double post of the Username Changer Link, I skipped a post I think

Something like that. I think @HenryWright may have the answer.

Since my users sign up with username and password, their profile name and mention name become their username. They can change their profile name but not their mention (@) name.

It is somewhat minor, but annoying.

I hear ya. I don’t necessarly want them to change their username. But it appears the @mention is connected to it.

I think it would be better to attach the mention to their profile name (real name), which is changable. And keep the username out of it all together.

I’m currently looking for the same thing as Steve mentioned in his last comment. Three years and five months later….
