How to control which wordpress users/roles become buddypress members?

I found this post describing how to do this but I don’t know where to place it!

I need to prevent certain roles from showing up in the member directory and giving them a profile. Is there another way to do this?

I was able to exclude from directory, but is there a way to prevent certain user roles from having a profile created?

I don’t think is possible because when a user signs up they are added as a subscriber and given a profile.
