How to custom file upload field?

Following this tutorial, I added in a text input field:
http://codex.buddypress.org/how-to-edit-group-meta-tutorial/However, I am looking to add a file upload field. I am trying to get a similar feel as to the facebook cover photos, so I need the user to be able to upload a second photo. Any snippets or directions would be greatly appreciated.
I tried simply changing the field to an input file type, but that obviously didn’t work.
