How to customize home page

Excuse me if I’m so new at this that I’m just not getting it, but here’s where I’m at. I’ve got Buddypress up and running. Wasn’t as bad as I thought once I switched hosts. My vision is to have a main home page at artistswap.com (WPMU install) that tells people about the site, etc. and invites them to join and create a blog and use the social features. Also want to add a forum (bbPress) and be able to feature blogs, users, etcl. After installing BP and the BP theme, my home page goes straight to my profile. This isn’t exactly what I was expecting. How do I get a “main” home page at artistswap.com and get buddypress features as part of the registration process? I hope that’s clear. I was hoping for a main page similar to wordpress.com and then have the social features presented to each person who signs up.

Hopefully I’m just missing the elephant in the room. I’ve been known to do it. I think BuddyPress and WordPress can get me to the vision I’ve had in my head for over six months. I’ve tried ning, kickapps, joomla with the new joomunity social plugin (I like that, but it’s still too new). This looks like a solid project and I don’t think there’s anything out there easier than WP.

    Thanks for any help.

Did you set up the profile fields under site admin?

The BP theme is for each person who signs up. To have all the nifty front page features means you’ll have to wait for Andy to make one, or cobble together on your own.

Hint: it will be a different theme than the BP *user* theme. :)

Yes, ron, I did add one extra field in profiles just to test. Andrea, I was hoping beyond hope this wouldn’t be a diy. I guess I’ll be patient. I just need to quit finding these bleeding edge projects.

That’s one of the things that makes them bleeding edge :)

Well BP isn’t released yet. It changes all the time, bugs are found and fixed often. I’ve made many hacks and fixes to BP for the site we released recently since we can’t wait for the official release at the end of the year… it’s the nature of the bleeding edge beast :)

Set the main blog to use the ‘home’ theme and don’t assign or have or have available the ‘buddypress’ theme for anyone.. it’ll automatically be used for profiles.
