How to disable activity stream commenting on UPDATES?

Hi all,
Newbie but trying to learn fast as the interest from users in beta is intense!

I have a problem with replies to updates disappearing – but, it seems, only when they are made from the activity stream.

Tried the usual fixes.

I have disabled commenting for blogs and posts from within the activity stream, but I see no way to disable activity stream commenting on updates.

Can anyone tell me how to do that?

Greatly appreciate any help….
