How to hide the name field in profile?

I’m wondering how to do this. Somebody posted some css code:
.profile .field_username { display:none; }
but I’m not really sure where to put it. I’m using the BP default theme, and I just stuck it randomly in the _inc/css/default.css file, but it didn’t do anything. Any advice?
