How to limit the features of Buddypress?

All I want for users is the ability to register as a member, the ability to send private messages to one another, and the ability to write on a forum.

How do I limit the Groups feature of Buddypress so that the tab doesn’t show up anymore?

If by limit, you mean simply turn off, look in the BuddyPress > Components menu in the wp-admin. ?
