how to manually upgrade to 2.5.0 from 2.4.3

I have shell access but not FTP access to my web directory and would like to upgrade from BP 2.4.3 to BP 2.5.0. Does anyone have the steps to do this manually? I thought about unzipping the folder within the plugins dir, but am not sure if a database update is also required. Thank you!

Try WP CLI, it’s brilliant for situations where you have shell access only.

What you basically need to do is:

    1) rename the old plugins/buddypress/ folder to bp-backup
    2) unzip BP 2.5.0 into plugins/buddypress/
    3) go to your site, into wp-admin/plugins.php. This will start the update script (it should happen instantly and without displaying anything).
    4) If the new BP is working for you, you can then delete the bp-backup folder.

If you find a problem, you can delete the new BP folder and rename bp-backup to buddypress, if that makes sense.

    WP-CLI is nice.

Thanks. The manual method with moving files around worked for me.
