how to query the categories of posts?

i’d like to show a different logo for each categories i have in my board… i personally post the posts myself so i have no problem having only one category for each post.
so if a post is in cat_ID == 4 , how can i check this ID in header.php?
same to show that cat_ID inside the archive of that categorie…
.. i mean it for B 1.2…
