Ive experience this problem when I tried uploading an avatar:
Upload Failed! Error was: Unable to create directory /var/www/wp-content/blogs.dir/1/files//avatars/1. Is its parent directory writable by the server?

My BP is installed in a secondary blog and me is ofcourse registered in the first blog so I have a bp_custom.php to call the users and avatars.

the bp custom is this:

define( ‘BP_AVATAR_UPLOAD_PATH’, ‘/var/www/wp-content/blogs.dir/1/files/avatars’ );
define( ‘BP_AVATAR_URL’, ‘http://popsicles.ph/’ );
