How to use the buddy bar elsewhere?

I am thinking about hiding the wp admin bar, and showing a menu in the sidebar. I’m getting trouble showing the menu items, in the dropdown menu when user is logged in, items like ‘activities’, ‘groups’, ‘messages’, etc.
I looked into the examples of changing the content of wp admin bar, but was confused by the many “events” and “actions”. I looked up the codex for $wp_admin_bar, but still having trouble using the get_nodes() method, which was supposed to give node information for the bar.
Could anyone understand me? Any help or suggestion? Thanks for your attention.
