I want activity update replies to show at the top of the activity stream

Hi all,
There’s a really active dialogue going on in of my community users’ activity updates. However, none of these replies show up as individual new entries in the activity stream – they show up only as nested comments for the original update – which noone sees anymore because it’s many weeks old.
This is not the way it should be done it seems to me – my community is losing out on a lot of value because they don’t get to see what’s going on.
How can I fix this?
I run the latest Buddypress on WordPress 3.1
