    when a user uploads an image, do the sizes i have chosen (thumbnail, medium, large) change the file size or does it just shrink the image? for instance, if they upload a 4mb size image and crop it, will that reduce its size to the thumbnail size?

    When you crop your avatar, the image gets reduced to the width and height dimensions.

    So yes, the filesize gets reduced.
