Is it possible to follow instead of friend?

Sorry if this has been discussed — I searched and couldn’t find anything relevant. I’m also totally new to this stuff…

Is it possible to follow someone and get status updates instead of friending them?

For the site I have in mind Twitter-like following (one-way sharing, non-confirmed) would be much better than friending (two-way mutual sharing, both parties confirm).

Is this possible? Is there a plug-in? Ideas?

No, this isn’t built into the core, but we’ve talked about it for quite a while. This will probably happen in the future, particularly with the ability to @mention someone; now all that’s missing is the ability to look at other people’s @mentions and follow their activity streams.
