Is it possible to truncate long xprofile fields in member directory?

I added some custom xprofile fields and am displaying them in the members loop/directory. But one of these fields is quite large; users often enter 200-400 words or more. I am happy to have this field show in full on the individual profile page, but I am hoping to truncate it after ~100 words on the members loop with a “read more…” link back to their profile.
How can this be done? Thanks in advance.
