Is using Buddypress for my directory website a good idea?

    Hi guys. As you can probably guess I’m new to Buddypress so excuse me if I’m asking a stupid question.

    The website I want to create is basically a directory for tradesmen (plumbers, electricians etc.) that people can search for by their postcode (zip code).

    Features I need are:

    1. Two types of users
    – TRADESMEN: With a public profile that advertises their services.
    – USER: This is the user who is searching for tradesmen. They have the option to create an account so they can send messages, leave reviews and have a shortlist of tradesmen. This profile will obviously be private.

    2. Search by distance using postcode.

    3. Different features for different membership levels. So tradesmen who pay for a premium membership will be able to link to their website / have extra fields on their profile.

    4. Customers are able to leave reviews & star rating on tradesmen profiles.

    Is this something that Buddypress will do or am I barking up the wrong tree? Any suggestions on how to go about doing this?

    Sounds possible… probably have to hire on some custom coding help though. I am not aware of anything out of the box or plugin wise that will do searching by distance with zip codes.

    The other stuff you mentioned can probably be pieced together with plugins from various places – may need some tweaks to get things to work as you describe – which will take some extra coding mercenary expenses I think.

    I am not an expert on all the various plugins, and couldn’t begin to tell you how much coding help would be needed. You can create a buddypress site pretty cheap to play with it and then see how many modifications you would need to get what you are going after.
