Making group activity invisible in the main stream

Can’t find anything about this just now, so if you know a quick answer or can point somewhere I’d be grateful.
I want to have public groups, sometimes with long posts in them, but stop the posts from appearing in the main activity stream to keep it tidy. Is there a simple way to do this for public groups, so they behave (in that respect) like private ones?
Edit; In fact, now I’m posting stuff in a group, it makes me wonder why the default behaviour is to spray group content all over the main activity stream. Surely it would make more sense to compartmentalise content?
