I would like to know if there is a way to make BuddyPress accessible only to logged-in approved members? Looking to create a community for teens victim of violence and it would be critical to not have their names, photos, or comments publicly available.

Yup. I’m using Burt’s tiny bit of plugin code and it does the trick.
