Members cannot edit profile (404 page)

Hi, I’ve found topics about this issue dating many (many!) years back but it still does not look like this bug is resolved… It appears to be related to both the Extended Profiles and the User Groups modules.
When users (including admins) go to the Profile tab on their member page (members/xxx/profile/) and then follow the Modify tab which points to members/xxx/profile/edit/ they get redirected to members/xxx/profile/edit/group/1/
This, in turn, generates a 404 response.
Does anyone have an idea what is going on and how to fix it?
