you can use the custom.css file to add custom css to the buddypress widgets, look what tags the widget uses then copy the corresponding code into your custom file and modify it to suit your needs

I tried adding css to the custom.css file but nothing is getting read from there.
It seems that the site-wide.css file works.
What css would I use to make the member widget show up like this site http://adventistfriends.net/home/home.php under the newest members section?
