Message notifications not clearing?

Fresh local install of WordPress 4.4.2 and Buddypress 2.5.2 and installed Buddypress Default Data. Of the various demo notifications, all of them cleared except the “You have 4 new messages” one. Went into messages and marked the messages as read various times but the notification won’t clear… Any insight? Thanks in advance.

Edit: Just realized a little something. The notifications won’t clear when I mark the new messages as read, I have to individually go into each pending message, open it and then refresh the page for the count to go down until it is cleared entirely. Is this normal?
