Messages sent to self

BP 1.2.6 WP 3.0.3 – Investigating the messaging feature I see that when I send a message to someone else I also receive a message. Is this normal? Is there a reason to have the message sent to self also?
When composing a message I have to type in the user’s ID. Is there not a auto-complete drop box or some other method for selecting recipients?
