Modifying Simple Chat for BuddyPress?

    Hi Everyone,

I’ve been pulling my hair out trying to find a lightweight chat plugin that works with mobile phones and looks nice. I want a very simple system, no sitewide chatroom, no extensive options, only a little bar showing online friends and that’s it.

I found http://wordpress.org/plugins/simple-chat/ yesterday and love it! It pulls up the BuddyPress member list and has a very lightweight feel. However, I have 2 issues with the plugin and was hoping someone more knowledgeable could help me out.

    1) It shows all users, even non-friends. I’m sure there is some type of filter I could add to only show friends (online or offline doesn’t matter), but I’m horrible with PHP and have no idea what to look for. What should I add and where?

    2) I heard the Ajax refresh rate will kill the server if there are 20+ chatters online. How can I reduce the rate to something more reasonable like every 1-3 seconds?

If anyone could help with this I would be eternally grateful. This is one of the nicest and cleanest-feeling chat plugins I’ve ever seen. (Sadly even better than the premium one from WPMU DEV – at least in my opinion.)

    One more question:
    3) I also noticed that when a new reply is posted, the chat window doesn’t scroll to the reply, so you have to scroll down every time. That’s more of a nuisance than anything, but I read somewhere you can add some jQuery code to a field like that to help it auto-scroll?
