Modifying the Query in Blog listings and adding a new dropdown list in the template.

I would like to add a second dropdown next to the “Order By” dropdown on the blogs section.

I can see the query in http://svn.buddypress.org/trunk/bp-blogs/bp-blogs-classes.php
I can’t find a way to add in another criteria. I want to make another dropdown list of categories that I’ve tied into their blog meta.

So for example, you could see a list of all blogs about “Dogs” or “Cats” from the dropdown, and it would update the listing via ajax like it does with the Order By Drop down.

Does this make sense? I tried to extend the class and replace the function, but it has no effect and no errors. I placed the new extended class in my theme’s custom-functions.php (Where my other customizations are)

Do I need to make a plugin to do this? Is this possible? I don’t want to alter core files!

Attention anyone please? I maybe new to the forums, but I’ve been a lurker for a long time. I would help more if I knew more about buddypress, but with the lack of community response It’s kind of a turn off.

I’m not trying to be rude, but I’m a little perplexed by this community. Any suggestions for me at all?

@jason — It’s something that could be built, but it’s a reasonable chunk of development work, which would need some thought and investigation.

I doubt anyone on the forum has done anything like this wrt blogs (certainly in a manner where they can give a quick answer on the forum). We’ve done similar things with the members directory (adding multiple filters), but it was considerable pieces of code and expertise.

In our case, we layered new functionality in / javascript etc., rather than trying to extend any existing function.

@Roger Coathup Thank you for your candid response. At least now I know there’s no way to add that functionality without just remaking something similar and new based off the old one.
