Need WPMU/BuddyPress Developers\' Opinion

Okay… I’m yet to use WPMU/BuddyPress, but have been anxious to do so. I just got a project that seems to be suited for WPMU/BuddyPress. But, I’m not 100% sure. So, I was hoping to get some input before I begin, to see if it is the right option. I’m currently developing a separate site in Elgg, and had thought of that as the other option. I just really prefer WP as a platform.

The site is going to be a community (I know, shocker ;) that will have your standard stuff: profiles, messaging, etc. But, the catch is the users don’t need to have blogs. I just need the community features. (And the admin will, of course, benefit from the CMS features.) Their profiles are the key part of the site. They will be visible/searchable by other users.

I read that back in March there had been some talk of BuddyPress for standard WP. But, I guess that didn’t pan out. Otherwise, I suppose that may have been a better choice.

In addition, if WPMU/BuddyPress is a good choice for a site such as this, without the individual blogs, etc., would you think the hosting requirements would be less than a WPMU install used for multiple blogs?

I hope this all makes sense. I’m just trying to figure out if it’s feasible to use WPMU/BuddyPress for this. (eg: Is it fairly straightforward? etc.) I appreciate any help/input you guys have. Thanks in advance!

obviously yes.Just turnoff the blogging and let the users register for the username only.So you have all the features except the blogging there.

and as far as server requirement is concerned, when blogging is turned off,the database size is small enough for your server and load is just ok ok.

Again, this is what I think with my experiences, and I think, wpmu+buddypress is best suited for your need(better than elgg ,as the wp community is much more versatile than the limited options available with elgg).

It hasn’t happened yet. Once WordPress and WordPress MU merge, then BuddyPress won’t be far behind.

I looked into Elgg for a few weeks a while ago. My conclusion? Well… you know what they say… if you don’t have anything good to say… don’t say anything at all. But I guess that’s saying something :) LOL.

As others have said… just turn off blogging and hide the “Blogs” menu item. Simple.
