New server stack somehow affecting updates

For some reason our profile updates stopped coming with content excerpts after we upgraded our server with better hardware. We’re on a pretty much identical server stack, but there are some minor differences. For one, we struggled for the UserVoice widget for a long time because cURL was not installed.
Since it was working before the move, we’re pretty sure malfunction is also caused by our server stack. Question is, what’s missing? What is used in order to create these excerpts?
