New users not getting added to the main site (multi-site enabled)

I will try to keep this short and to the point.
I have opted to use bbPress 2.0 and sitewide forums on my Buddypress enabled multisite network, I use Buddypress on the mainsite and allow users to create blogs in a subfolder. I also use private forums. In order to handle access to the forums I use the addon http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/members/. Everything works great when my users are actually showing up as users on my main site where the forums are installed.
However I have noticed that new users to my buddypress site are not added to the main blog by default and I have to manually add them from “Network Admin” and under sites -> Add existing user. I want to remember that this was automated before, am I wrong?
If I’m wrong, is this something that may be fixed somehow?
