Notification emails sent out to blog followers upon activating BuddyPress

As soon as I activated BuddyPress in WordPress.com, my blog followers started receiving a bunch of notification emails about new posts on random topics such as [account] [members] [register] [login] etc.
I had to deactivate BuddyPress as it started spamming my blog email followers. Any idea why this happened and what caused it?
