Out of Memory Error when uploading media files

I’m running BP1.5.5 on WordPress 3.3.1. I recently upgraded from BP1.2.9 to 1.5 and as soon as I did I started to get out of memory errors when I try to upload any media files (not big ones 500k). I’ve deactivated all plugins and the memory error disappears until I reactivate BP. I’m hosted with 1and1 on a business package that allocates 80MB memory limit, and this is something they tell me I cannot change with php.ini files.

A typical error I’m getting is:
Fatal error: Out of memory (allocated 31457280) (tried to allocate 5268 bytes) in /homepages/7/d267599207/htdocs/wsb5161591501/wp-includes/media.php on line 258

I’m using a standard default buddypress theme with no changes to the core files.

I’d really appreciate any suggestions or advice.

Thanks for your suggestion. I’ve updated the wp_config.php as suggested to 96MB, but I’m still getting errors.

What is strange is that I can upload a 1.2MB pdf but I get an error when I try to upload a 500k JPEG?

Likely the processing ‘crunching’ that has to be done on an image.

tbh 80mb script memory ought to be sufficient, but then I don’t know what scripts are trying to run altogether- your host saying 80mb is the limit is a bit mean but then if your on shared hosting server administrators do have to manage this allocation and rightly prevent all means of adjusting values as it has a knock on effect where one site could bring down the server if allowed to consume unlimited memory to run scripts. If the situation / site is critical your best bet would be moving up to the next stage of hosting and get a VPS where you can allocate your resources as you see fit.
