Plugin Activation Error

I installed WP MU 2.8.2 successfully with no problems, uploaded the plugin, setup the plgin folder properties “777” and moved themes to WP-Content and bphome to themes directory, every time i activate the plugin, the site stops and i get gray screen, so i need to delete the plugin for me to get back to my admin.
i do not have in my hosting .htaccess if you want to suggest that i should have one, in all my other 6 blogs i don’t have this file and they are running fine, is it a must to have this file in WP MU because it did not come with the MU files.
