Pretty Notifications

I can’t find anything using the Search on this, but what I want to do is have BP automatically notify a member on-screen when they have a new message or friend request. I’m thinking of using a small star image in the corner of their top-left avatar picture, perhaps using css to show it when there’s a notification of some kind. Am getting a bit lost around the code. Does anyone have any quick pointers on this? Thanks.
