Problem with Buddypress Profile Photo filename length?

Hi
I am having some problems with the profile photo upload / crop thing, basically either the crop function shrinks down to about 7px x 7px, or it just tells me there was a problem cropping the image.
On further investigation this seems to be caused by images with long file names.
Does anyone have any workaround for this?
