Problems with mentioning

Hi I am new to buddypress but I have picked it up fairly easy so far (have experience with WordPress) however I have noticed the same problem many other people have, the site displays people with their Display name – but @mention only works with their username. upon reading through google, this site and wordpress support etc. The only real solution offered was BP-Labs, however this plugin is now outdated.
I am running WP 3.9.1 and Buddypress 2.0.1.
I am wondering if there is any suggestion so that if I want to use @mention I can use the display name. the site is being set up as a company intranet. It will be private and non accessible by public, except for the first page prompting for a login.
Please let me know how I can adjust the @mention to work by display name, I am happy to locate specific files and update lines of code if you can provide me the location and code to place

p.s. the site is still in development so please dont expect much to be on it so far, I just want to make sure the desired features and function are working to our expectations
