profile fields & field groups that users can have multiple instances of

Hi all,
I’m trying to create a custom profile section that users could have multiple instances of. Being a relative newbie with BP, I’d value some advice on the best way to go about it. There may also be a plugin for this that I’m not aware of. I’m familiar with coding for WordPress.
Specifically, I’m trying for a group of profile fields that together describe an item. I would then like a “new item” link, which would provide another set of the same fields to describe an additional item. A user would have as many instances of these items as they like.
I’ve played around with the custom profile fields a little, and looked at the database tables involved. It’s a little overwhelming, though!
