Is there an easy way to change the core terminology used on the default theme?

For example, if I wanted to change the word “Friends” throughout the site, where would I locate all the instances of the word Friend(s)? Which files? (or Wire, Groups, etc.)

(I realize I would need to change this for each upgrade.)
