Read-only user?

    I have a strange request from a client, who wants to be able to set certain accounts to “read only.” That is, they cannot friend anyone, join groups, post to forums, send messages, etc., though they can log into the site and see all content as a normal user. They are essentially lurkers.

    By assigning the user the role of subscriber and using a WP plugin called WP Ban User, I can prevent the user from performing any WP actions (posting, commenting, etc.) but not BuddyPress. Is there any easy way to do this for BP components?

    I thought using the function in the ban user that checks the user’s status to add conditional display of BP actions (add friend, join group, etc.) in the templates … but geez, what a lot of work. Seems as if there ought to be a way to “switch off” the user higher up the chain.
