Request membership link not working

I know a trac was opened and closed on this. Running latest version of BP and wp. When users click link to request membership a red warning pops up saying the don’t have access. My BP-groups-loader.php file does NOT look like the updated one in the trac, m guessing because m version of BP is newer than the trac, but still have this issue. Please advise.
EDIT: Interestingly, the link does NOT work but the button does…?
