Scary problem: BP plugin deactivated all by itself

Our site stopped working an hour ago and I realized after some investigation that the BP plugin was deactivated. I didn’t deactivate it, and the last time I had touched the server was many hours ago. All the other plugins were still fine.
I backed up the database and then hit “Activate Sitewide”. I got the message that the “plugin failed to activate because it triggered a fatal error”, but it was indeed activated. Things appear to be working ok.
So…
– Have you experienced this?
– Any ideas why the plugin would just decide to deactivate?
– Any suggestions on where I should look for clues as to why this happened?
Any pointers much appreciated.
