Searching through xprofile data to create a count for a specific data type

So I have some programming experience and I am starting to understand the wp platform. I am trying to create a plugin to search through a my xprofile data to display a directory of businesses in a new tab within the member directory.. I have setup a xprofile field for “account type” and the user can choose between business and individual. What would be the best way to set this up and access the data?
