Secure File Storage and Sharing

I would like to have registered users securely store and access PDF and DOC files in a WordPress site that is using BuddyPress. I know I can create groups and manage access permissions but I want to make sure that the files are secure on the backend and I don’t have enough faith in my hosting provider or even WordPress itself as I know WP sites have been hacked.
Is there a way to use something like Google Docs or AWS to store the files but manage permissions from within WordPress? Managing users and permissions independent from WordPress would be too much work since I already have the users and roles defined in WordPress.
Any ideas or solutions? How do medical and legal businesses make sensitive client data available to them in a WordPress site?
