Send to e-mail-adress instead of username

Hey guys,
first of all: I love the buddypress community, you guys are awesome and have been very helpful to me.
Now on to my question: A lot of users dont know the username of another user, but they sure do know the e-mail adress. My question is this: Can I add a function so that my users can also enter the user-email in the “to”-field where usually only a username would work?
