Set Show_x_Comments number

In the buddypress activity stream, a thread can exceed over 100 comments and resembles a snake with all of the replies to replies. Buddypress seems to randomly show a “Show all x Comments” link where the entire thread gets revealed. How can I manually set the number of comments that triggers collapsing the thread? If I wanted it to be 10 max comments with the any number above that being collapsed, how could I do that? Even going into the core files, if needed…
