Show titles only on first page

So, using the default buddypress template, how can (if I can) show only the titles on the wordpress first page and, if possible, in categories. I understood from the wordpress.org site that this is a template ‘issue’. Well, if I must modify the template, which one is it? What to modify?
Any help would be appreciated.
