Sitewide forums, stop showing group forums…

    Hi all,

I’ve had a quick search on Google and the forums but couldn’t find a fix for this – maybe I’m being thick because it seems like something many people would want achieved.

I have BP installed at example.com, with bbPress installed at example.com/forums. The integration works just as advertised.

But I’d like site members to be able to use the forums just like regular ones, so they can discuss things on their group pages in ‘Group Forums’, and then with the rest of the site on the ‘Sitewide Forums’.

When I visit the bbPress installation I obviously have all of the forums and threads from the groups; how do I just get a regular forum back?

Is it a matter of ‘hiding’ the group forums, or should I create a completely separate bbPress install for the ‘Sitewide Forums’, using the regular WPMU/bbPress integration? This won’t cause problems for BP will it?

No need to have a separate install. Did you install Burt’s recent Group Forum plug in? I’ve got it active over at delsolownersclub.com/discussions if you’d like to see how it can be configured.

There are a couple of solutions.

One is to just use the bp group forums as is. mikepratt has a nice example of this at http://buglenotes.com.

johnjamesjacoby has the bbGroups plugin working over at http://delsolownersclub.com/discussions

fishbowl81 has taken a different approach with http://gorgeousgamers.com/beta/forums/ with the discussion starting about this in https://buddypress.org/forums/topic.php?id=1321

How did you create that page: http://delsolownersclub.com/discussions

That’s exactly what I want to do on my site.

I’ve got @Burtadsit’s bbGroup plugin up and running.

How did you integrate it into your buddypress theme?

Is it a ‘page’ in the root blog or a special page?

    Thx, Gordon

    It’s neither actually anymore.

It involves “deep integration” on the bbPress side, including WordPress/BuddyPress inside bbPress, and then making a new theme for bbPress that matches. :)

Trent and I are working on a comprehensive walk-through on how to do this soon.

Thanks John, I’ll wait for the tutorial!

Note – because of a limitation of my hosting provider (for whom I am a reseller) – they don’t allow xml-rpc calls to the same server, I have had to put bbPress on a different server from WordPress & BuddyPress, so if you want a tester to go through the tutorial I am happy to do so.

(I have a few spare domain names kicking around that I can use for this!)
