So New from NING

So, yeah, I’m used to NING, it was pretty easy but really lacked the thing I was looking for which was a seamless WordPress integration. I messed around with some Ning comment integration plugin but it was pretty useless and once they stated the pricing changes I decided its time to move.
So, I have my buddypress community started. I must say its a little more involved in setting up something that’s decent. I tried integrating it into my existing wordpress theme but it just looked like junk. Not being real savy I decided to just change themes to a bp theme. Not real easy either as I had made a number of customizations which I had to go back over. Anyway, I managed a descent looking setup but the biggest thing concerning me is some things I would think core functions in a community. Photos, Albums (Plural) and events.I realize there are Plugins for these things and I try to research them all but then I get confused. I wonder what one is best? Which one will continue to be developed and which one will get phased out and I’ll be stuck with it. I’m afraid of using one and then having a bunch of photos uploaded from members and then telling them, “oh, sorry gotta change plugins, your photos will be deleted.” I’m not sure which event calendar is popular or if one is still even being developed.
Could I get some input on whats the safest options to go and what people are using in general. A list of essential plugins maybe? I see alot of potential with buddypress but I think there is alot of functionality I’m overlooking because it comes in the form of a plugin and I don’t even know whats good and whats not.

It’s true that media tends to be a rather large weakness for BP and one of the obvious surprises migrating from Ning, however a lot of work has been done on an extremely well featured album plugin and which is still actively being developed and improved and as such I’m sure it isn’t going to be abandoned in any hurry
Check the community groups tab as all plugins have their own group and you’ll find Album there.
Events is something of a sore point, there was a plugin that handled events very nicely, sadly with upgrade of WPMU to 2.9 and then further, upgrade to BP 1.2 broke the plugin completely, there was supposedly going to work done to bring it in line with bp 1.2 but that appears to have stalled .
